Instagram Introduces Instants Feature With 24 Hour Photo Disappearing Option to Compete in Ephemeral Sharing Space

Instagram is experimenting with a new feature called Instants that allows users to share photos which automatically disappear after a limited time. The rollout of this feature highlights the platform’s growing focus on more authentic and less permanent content sharing, a trend that continues to gain popularity among younger audiences.
The company has designed Instants to encourage more natural photo sharing without over editing. Users can only capture images directly through the in app camera, and there is no option to upload photos from the gallery. This limitation is intentional, as Instagram wants the feature to reflect real moments rather than curated or heavily edited content.
Editing tools within Instants are also kept minimal. Users can add simple text to their photos, but advanced filters and enhancements have been deliberately avoided. This approach aims to keep the content raw, simple, and closer to real life experiences instead of polished social media posts.
Once shared, these photos remain visible for up to 24 hours and can be viewed only once by recipients. After that, they automatically disappear, aligning with the growing popularity of ephemeral content across social platforms. This makes interactions feel more immediate and less permanent, encouraging users to share without hesitation.
Interestingly, the Instants feature has been introduced in a way that closely resembles Snapchat’s core idea of disappearing content. However, Instagram has added its own twist by extending visibility up to 24 hours instead of immediate disappearance, offering users a slightly longer window for engagement.
Currently, the feature is being tested in select markets such as Spain and Italy and is available on both Android and iOS devices. Users may access it directly through the Instagram app or through a separate Instants interface, depending on availability during the testing phase.
Alongside this experimental feature, Instagram has also introduced smaller updates aimed at improving user experience. One of these allows users to edit comments within 15 minutes of posting, with a label indicating that changes have been made. Additionally, the platform has launched Teen Accounts in regions like India, offering enhanced safety controls and content filtering options for younger users.
With Instants, Instagram appears to be moving further into the space of real time and temporary sharing, where content feels more spontaneous and less permanent, reflecting the evolving behavior of modern social media users.
