How to Stop Google Maps from Tracking Your Location and Delete Stored Data
Learn how to manage your privacy on Google Maps by disabling location tracking deleting old history and using auto-delete settings to control what data the app stores over time

Google Maps is one of the most widely used navigation apps, helping millions of users with directions, route planning and personalized recommendations. However, the app continuously records your location in the background through its Location History feature. This data includes places you visit, routes you take and your travel timeline, which Google uses to provide suggestions and improve navigation. While this can be convenient, many users feel concerned about privacy because every movement gets logged. Fortunately, you can take control by disabling tracking and managing stored data.
To stop Google Maps from saving your location history on Android or iPhone, start by opening the Google Maps app. Tap on your profile photo at the top right and navigate to either Your Timeline or Settings. From there, access the Location and Privacy options and select Timeline. Sign in to your Google account if prompted, and then turn off your Timeline. This prevents Google Maps from storing future location history, although previously recorded data will remain until deleted manually.
Deleting old location history is also straightforward. Open the app, go to Your Timeline or Settings, and access the Location and Privacy menu. Here, you can choose Delete All Timeline Data to remove everything or select Delete Range of Timeline Data to remove data from specific dates. Additionally, Google Maps offers an Auto-delete feature, which allows you to automatically erase history after a set period. Options include 3 months, 18 months or 36 months. Activating this ensures your past location records are periodically removed without manual intervention.
It is important to note that disabling Location History will affect certain personalized features. Some functionality, like recommendations based on past activity, may be limited. Google may still access some location data through other settings, such as Web & App Activity, so complete invisibility is not guaranteed.
By carefully managing these settings, users can maintain their privacy while still benefiting from the core features of Google Maps. Taking a few minutes to review and update your Timeline and auto-delete preferences can significantly reduce the amount of personal data the app stores over time.
