Google Wallet Adds Aadhaar Support, Digital ID Verification Gets Easier in India

Google Wallet now supports Aadhaar Verifiable Credentials in India, allowing users to verify identity digitally without carrying physical documents while improving privacy, security, and faster access across multiple services

Google has taken a major step toward simplifying digital identity management by rolling out a new update for Google Wallet. With this upgrade, users in India can now store Aadhaar Verifiable Credentials directly on their smartphones. The feature has been developed in partnership with UIDAI and is designed to reduce dependency on physical documents during everyday verification tasks.

This new system is built on global digital identity standards and introduces a privacy focused approach called selective disclosure. In simple terms, users do not need to share their full Aadhaar details every time. Instead, only the required information can be shared depending on the situation. This makes identity verification more secure and controlled, whether it is used online or in physical locations.

The rollout is also aimed at making daily services faster and more convenient. Google has already started integrating this digital ID system with several platforms. For example, at PVR INOX, it can help with age verification and reward access during movie bookings. On BharatMatrimony, it supports verification for premium profiles. Travel platform Atlys is using it to simplify international visa applications by auto filling identity details. Other services like Mygate are planning to use it for verifying delivery personnel, while Snabbit is exploring its use for validating gig workers and service providers.

Along with Aadhaar integration, Google is also expanding its ID pass feature. This allows users to create a secure digital identity using passport details. The ID pass can be used both online and offline for tasks such as logging into services or confirming age based eligibility. It is designed to function as a portable identity layer that stays within the user’s control.

For now, Aadhaar Verifiable Credentials are available to Google Wallet users in India, marking an important shift toward digital identity adoption in the country. Meanwhile, the ID pass feature is currently being rolled out in select international markets including Singapore, Taiwan, and Brazil, with plans for broader expansion in the future.

With this update, Google is clearly moving toward a future where carrying physical identity documents may no longer be necessary, making verification simpler, faster, and more privacy friendly for users.
