BSNL Reports Strong Growth in User Revenue Amid Push for Network Upgrade

State run telecom operator sees sharp rise in average revenue per user while government focuses on modernization expansion of services and strengthening domestic telecom infrastructure across the country

State owned telecom operator BSNL has reported a significant jump in its average revenue per user, signaling a positive shift in its financial performance. During the last financial year, the company’s ARPU climbed to around 101 rupees, marking a sharp increase of nearly 42 percent compared to the previous year.

The update was shared following a recent review meeting led by Jyotiraditya Scindia with the company’s management. The discussion highlighted ongoing efforts by the government to improve service quality, expand digital access, and modernize the telecom infrastructure to make the operator more competitive.

While the growth in revenue per user is encouraging, the company continues to face stiff competition from private players such as Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, both of which already have a strong presence in the 5G segment. In contrast, BSNL is still in the process of expanding its 4G services across multiple regions.

The company has been working on a cloud based 4G network architecture that can be upgraded to 5G in the future. Testing for its next generation services has already been completed, and the upcoming 5G rollout is expected to play a key role in narrowing the gap with competitors.

Employee unions within BSNL have also stepped in to push for stronger institutional support. They have appealed to Narendra Modi to mandate the use of BSNL’s indigenous 4G services across government departments and public sector units, especially for connections funded by public money.

According to these unions, such a move would not only provide financial stability to the company but also strengthen national security and support the broader vision of self reliance in telecom technology. The proposal suggests that both central and state government entities adopt BSNL services more widely.

In recent months, BSNL has also introduced new services and continued expanding its network footprint. However, the road ahead remains challenging as it works to catch up with private telecom operators that have already scaled their advanced networks.

Despite these hurdles, the sharp rise in ARPU reflects improving user engagement and could signal early results of the company’s ongoing transformation efforts.
