Apple May Increase MacBook Neo Price as Demand Continues to Surge

Apple could discontinue the cheapest MacBook Neo variant due to rising production costs and strong global demand, potentially pushing the starting price significantly higher in several markets soon.

Apple’s budget focused MacBook Neo may soon become more expensive as fresh reports suggest the company is planning major changes to its entry level configuration. The laptop gained massive popularity after launch because of its aggressive pricing, but rising demand and increasing production costs now appear to be forcing Apple to rethink its strategy.

According to recent reports, Apple could discontinue the 256GB storage variant of the MacBook Neo, which is currently the most affordable option in the lineup. If the company moves ahead with this decision, buyers may have to purchase the higher storage model instead, pushing the starting price closer to 699 dollars globally and around Rs 79990 in India.

The MacBook Neo became one of Apple’s most talked about products shortly after launch. Starting at around Rs 69990, the device directly challenged several premium Windows laptops while still offering Apple’s ecosystem and design appeal. Many first time MacBook buyers reportedly showed strong interest in the laptop because it made Apple hardware more accessible than before.

Industry reports claim the demand for the device has been much stronger than Apple originally expected. Former Bloomberg journalist and chip expert Tim Culpan recently stated that Apple is increasing MacBook Neo production to nearly 10 million units. Even Apple CEO Tim Cook reportedly acknowledged during a recent earnings discussion that the company underestimated the popularity of the laptop.

One of the biggest reasons behind the affordable pricing was Apple’s use of the A18 Pro chip, originally introduced in the iPhone 16 Pro series. Reports suggest Apple used what are known as binned chips for the MacBook Neo. These are processors that may contain a minor hardware limitation, such as an inactive GPU core, while still remaining fully functional for everyday use.

This strategy reportedly allowed Apple to keep production costs low enough to launch the laptop at a competitive price point. However, with demand rapidly increasing, the company is now said to be placing fresh chip orders with manufacturing partner TSMC.

The report mentions that these newer chip orders may involve fully functional processors along with rising RAM prices, both of which could increase Apple’s manufacturing costs. Analysts believe Apple may now be looking for ways to protect its profit margins without slowing down production.

As a result, discontinuing the lower storage version is being considered one of the easiest solutions. If the 256GB model disappears, consumers would automatically move to the 512GB variant, which carries a higher price tag. Apple has used similar strategies before with MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models by increasing base storage configurations while also raising prices.

Reports also suggest the company previously reduced availability of some entry level Mac mini models due to increasing component costs and strong market demand. Apple appears determined to avoid stopping MacBook Neo sales entirely, especially because the laptop is helping the company attract new customers away from Windows PCs.

Analysts believe the MacBook Neo is becoming an important product for Apple’s long term ecosystem strategy. Many buyers switching from traditional PCs to MacBooks may later subscribe to Apple services such as iCloud, Apple Music and other paid offerings, helping the company expand its recurring revenue business.

Although Apple has not officially confirmed any pricing changes yet, growing reports indicate that the affordable MacBook Neo may not remain as inexpensive for much longer.
