The Karnataka High Court has expressed concern that a large number of children are becoming addicted to social networking sites these days. Also, the High Court has given a verbal advice to the central government to think about fixing the age limit for using social media in the same way that 21 years has been fixed for voting.

On Tuesday, Division Bench headed by Justice G. Narender, Vijayakumar and A Patil conducted the inquiry. After hearing the arguments, the court said, ‘It is better to ban social media. This will be good enough. Now school going children are also slaves to it. At least the central government should set an age limit for social media use,’ it said verbally.

Do 17 or 18-year-old children have the maturity to decide what is beneficial and what is harmful to the country’s interest? Users must be at least 21 years old. Because the right to vote has been given to those of that age,’ the bench said orally.

Meanwhile, the bench adjourned the hearing saying that it would issue an order on the interim application on Wednesday. A lawyer representing the central government said, ‘According to the law, Aadhaar and other documents must be submitted to play some online games’.

The bench then asked, ‘Then why those measures have not been extended to social media users. Now people express their opinion on everything’. It has to be examined whether the objectionable content violates Sections 69A (1) and (2) of the Information Technology Act. The court said that X Corp will have to comply with restraining orders if it is found to be in violation.

A lawyer who represented X Corp said, “All the restraining orders challenged earlier have been complied with. 1,000 tweets have been asked to be removed without any reason.” The bench then said, ‘The central government should justify the ban while ordering it. Or else the social media may be dragged to court by its users,’ it said verbally.
