Five Muslim girl students from the Hampanakatta University College here have asked for transfer certificates from the college administration after being denied permission to attend classes wearing hijab. Hijab Row: students seek transfer certificates from college in Karnataka.

Days after the Hijab Row Karnataka, Mangalore University vice-chancellor PS Yadapadithaya had announced that the varsity would make special arrangements for Muslim girls if they are not willing to adhere to the headscarf rule in class and want to get admitted to other colleges that permit the same.

University College principal Anasuya Rai told media that five Muslim girl students met him a few days ago with a request letter to issue transfer certificates so that they could join other colleges. “After going through the letters, we found they were incomplete. I asked them to come with a fresh letter after incorporating the changes. However, they are yet to return. We will decide after they resubmit it,” she said.

From last Monday, all UG classes were shifted online due to ongoing evaluation work at the campus. The principal said after the classes shifted online, barring a few, all other Muslim girls who also protested against the hijab ban have started attending classes. The college has 44 Muslim girls studying in UG courses.
