The state government has instructed the district administration to provide all the details in this regard before presenting the budget. The leaders of various organizations and associations have been insisting that Chikkodi and Gokak taluks should be made into new districts, and for administrative purposes, the leaders have demanded that the two taluks of Bailahongala and Athani should be declared as new districts.

In 1997, the then Chief Minister J.H Patel almost issued a notification to declare Chikkodi and Gokak as new districts, but did not due to pressure from various Kannada organizations to prevent Marathi dominance on the border of Belagavi district.

Leaders of various organizations said that Belagavi should be divided into three districts for administrative convenience. He said that Chikkodi and Gokak taluks have the necessary infrastructure and manpower to make them the new district headquarters. Leaders of Congress, BJP and JDS parties from Chikkodi and Gokak are also of the opinion that the two taluks should be declared as new districts.

Belagavi district also has 15 taluks and 18 assembly constituencies. Still, since decades there has been a continuous struggle for the creation of Chikkodi, Gokak, Bailahongala and Athani districts. In this background, the state government has accepted the request submitted by the local district struggle committee and the Regional Commissioner Sanjay Shetten has been ordered to submit the report within the stipulated time.
