Karnataka: liquor sale banned, Section 144 CrPC imposed

Ahead of ‘Srirangapatna Chalo’ call given by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) for Saturday, Section 144 CrPC was imposed in the town of Srirangapatna in Karnataka’s Mandya district. Karnataka: liquor sale banned, Section 144 CrPC imposed.

Section 144 CrPc was imposed in the town from 6 am to 6 pm today. More than 500 police personnel were deployed and 4 check posts were installed for security arrangements. A route march was taken out in presence of SP N Yatish.

Deputy Commissioner Aswathi S noted that ‘weekly market (usually held on Saturday) was postponed; Karnataka liquor sale banned in 5 km limits of Srirangapatna today. Masjid road was closed and people were not allowed inside the mosque.

CCTV cameras were installed and a special team was formed to keep an eye on suspicious movements.’Notably, some activists of Hindu organisations threatened to ‘enter’ Jamia masjid in the historical town of Srirangapatna in Mandya district, on June 4 and perform puja.

The Hindu organisations called on social media to participate in the ‘Srirangapatna Chalo’ programme. Karnataka Home Minister Araga Jnanendra on Friday assured that the district police is instructed to take all precautionary measures to maintain law and order during the ‘Srirangapatna Chalo’ drive.

“No one is allowed to take the law into their hands at any cost,” the Home Minister said. The Home Minister further added that ‘any organisation has the right to present its claims peacefully and democratically.’

Last month, the fringe group ‘Narendra Modi Vichar Manch’ (NMVM), approached the Mandya deputy commissioner claiming that the Masjid-e-Ala was ‘Moodala Bagilu Anjaneya Swami temple’, and sought permission to worship there.
