BPL Card: Govt collect 21000 BPL Cards, 11 crore fine from govt employees

Karnataka Food and Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department has collected a fine of Rs 13.5 crore from 4.6 lakh fake BPL card holders. It has come to light that only 21,232 government employees have got BPL cards, govt collect Rs 11.2 crore fines from them.

The operation against the fake BPL card holders was started from the month of February 2021 itself. Additional Director (Vigilance and Public Distribution) Gyanendra Kumar Gangwar is reported to have informed that the operation is still going on and the data of such ineligible beneficiaries is being collected by various departments using Aadhaar numbers.

We have also sought help from the transport department for the operation. 12,583 BPL beneficiaries are known to own luxury 4 wheelers. We found that 2.9 lakh farmers with more than three hectares of agricultural land have also received BPL cards.

Our officers have traced 2,679 ineligible beneficiaries. “We have identified 50,000 people with an annual income of more than Rs 1.2 lakh from the Income Tax Department’s data,” he said. He replied to a question whether it was enough to punish the government employees by imposing a fine, he said that it was done because this was the first instance.

He said that he was pardoned only after imposing a heavy fine. Out of 21,232 such employees, 17,521 have already converted their ration card to APL category, he said. While imposing the penalty, we have considered their financial status.
