The government, eyeing the Excise Department, which generates most of the state’s revenue, has planned to fill its treasures through the sale of liquor. At present, only bars and restaurants are licensed to sell liquor. But henceforth the government has decided to allow the sale of liquor in malls and supermarkets as well.

There is information that the Excise department officials have already held three rounds of meetings and submitted a proposal to the state government to grant licenses to sell liquor in supermarkets and malls. If the Chief Miniter give green signal, Liquor will be available in all the malls and supermarkets of the Karnataka. It is said that he has also held a final meeting with the Excise Minister regarding this. At present, liquor can be bought and sold by holders of CL-2 licenses in large malls and supermarkets.

But no separate license has been given to malls. Now the government is planning to give license for sale of liquor in malls and supermarkets. Earlier, the government, which had increased the excise duty, had given a target of Rs 30,000 crore in tax collection. Currently 13,515 crore revenue has been collected from April 1 to August 28.

Now the government, which has not issued new CL-2, CL-9 licenses since 1994, is all set to increase revenue by giving licenses to new pubs. Also, it is said that there is a thought to increase the license transfer fee by 5 percent, thereby preparing to increase the income of its coffers. Excise Minister RB Thimmapura spoke about this proposal and discussed it.
