T20 World Cup 2022: Defending champions Australia failed to qualify for semifinals

Australia’s dream of defending the T20 World Cup trophy in front of their home crowd has been quashed after England defeated Sri Lanka in their last Super12 game. A win for England would have made them the 2nd team from group 1 to make it to the semi-final. The rain played a huge role in deciding the fate of teams in group 1 and Australia’s much-anticipated tie against England was washed out. The washout also played a key role in Australia’s exit from the tournament. Interestingly, New Zealand, England and Australia have finished at 7 points each. But Australia haven’t made it to the semi-final while the other two teams have. Here’s the explanation.

Australia have been ruled out of the 2022 T20 World Cup on the basis of NRR. The NRR of the Aaron Finch-led side is way lesser than that of England and New Zealand. NZ have finished at the top spot with 7 points at an NRR of +2.113. England have finished with 7 points at an NRR of +0473. Australia, who also have 7 points in their account, have an NRR of -0.173. The NRR has often spoiled the chances of teams in different cricketing tournaments and this time, it cost home team Australia a spot in the semi-final.

The Australian selectors are expected to ring changes after the team’s below-par run and a captaincy change could also be on cards. Captain Aaron Finch recently hinted that several Australian players could retire from T20I after the ICC event and some retirements are on the cards. Matthew Wade is confirmed to announce his retirement.
