Steve Smith announced retirement after defeat Champions Trophy 2025

Steve Smith announced his retirement from ODIs after Australia failed to qualify for the Champions Trophy 2025 final. On Tuesday, March 4, the Aussies crashed out after losing by four wickets to Rohit Sharma’s India in the semi-final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Smith scored a 96-ball 73 to help Australia set a target of 265, which India chased down with 11 balls to spare in their innings. Smith said he has won two ODI World Cups for Australia (2015 and 2023) in his illustrious career.

“It has been a great ride and I have loved every minute of it,” Smith was quoted as saying in a press release. “There have been so many amazing times and wonderful memories. Winning two World Cups was a great highlight along with the many fantastic team-mates who shared the journey.”

Steve Smith’s ODI achievements include being named the Australian Men’s ODI Player of the Year in both 2015 and 2021, as well as earning a place in the ICC Men’s ODI Team in 2015. Smith said Test cricket is his ‘priority’ and also spoke about the importance of the World Test Championship final against South Africa at Lord’s in June and other important commitments.

Now is a good opportunity for people to start preparing for the 2027 World Cup so it feels like the right time to make way,” Smith said. Smith made his ODI debut in 2010 against the West Indies at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground. A leg-spinning all-rounder, Smith turned into a proper batsman.

Smith played 170 ODIs, scoring 5,800 runs at an average of 43.28, including 12 centuries and 35 fifties. He has also taken 28 wickets at an average of 34.67.
