Mumbai Indians lost 4 lakh followers after Hardik Pandya become captain
Within moments of dropping Rohit Sharma from the captaincy and replacing him with Hardik Pandya for IPL 2024, the Mumbai Indians franchise has lost more than four lakh followers on Twitter.
The franchise confirmed Hardik Pandya’s selection as Mumbai Indians captain on December 15, just weeks after buying Gujarat’s star all-rounder Hardik Pandya on the first player retention day of IPL 2024. The decision drew heavy criticism from across Mumbai Indians’ cricketing circles, especially from Rohit Sharma’s die-hard fan base.
Moments after Mumbai Indians picked Hardik Pandya over veteran Rohit Sharma, more than four lakh fans unfollowed the Mumbai Indians team on X (formerly Twitter). Many Mumbai Indians fans are said to have lost interest in the franchise due to Rohit’s absence. In the span of just one hour on the evening of December 15, Mumbai Indians’ follower count on the microblogging site dropped from 8.6 million to 8.2 million.
Mumbai Indians Poor performance in three editions:
It is said that Rohit Sharma has been sacked due to the poor performance of the Mumbai Indians team in the last three editions of the IPL. The franchise won back-to-back titles in 2019 and 2020 respectively, becoming the most successful team in the tournament’s history. Mumbai Indians had won five IPL titles under Sharma before a three-year trophy drought.

The team’s three-year trophy drought is said to have prompted the management to pick Gujarat Titans captain Hardik Pandya. After spending years in the Mumbai Indians camp, Pandya joined new franchise Gujarat Titans ahead of IPL 2022, winning the title in the first edition under his captaincy. The all-rounder led the team to the finals in the 2023 season. There they lost the title against CSK.

Ahead of IPL 2024, many unexpected events are happening. Major changes have taken place in the Mumbai Indians team. A big change was expected when Hardik Pandya was called from the Gujarat Titans team to the Mumbai team in a trade of 15 crore rupees. Similarly, he was chosen as the leader.
