Mithali Raj announced retirement from international cricket

Mithali Raj, the quintessential legend of Indian cricket, has announced her retirement from international cricket. Mithali, 39, made the announcement on Twitter where she shared a heartwarming statement summing up her 23-year-long career. Mithali Raj announced retirement from international cricket.

Mithali Raj retires not only as the most-capped India women’s cricketer of all time, but also as the leading run-scorer in women’s international cricket having amassed 10,868 runs from 333 appearances for India. Under Mithali, Indian women’s cricket made some giant strides on the global cricketing map, the biggest one being making the final of the 2017 Women’s World Cup final against England at Lord’s.

An a heartfelt letter on social media announcing her retirement, Mithali wrote, “I set out as a little girl on the journey to wear the India blues as representing your country is the highest honour. The journey was full of highs and some lows. Each event taught me something unique and the last 23 years have been the most fulfilling, challenging and enjoyable years of my life.

“Like all journeys, this one too must come to an end. “Today is the day I retire from all forms of international Cricket. Each time I stepped on the field, I gave my very best with the intent to help India win. I will always cherish the opportunity given to me to represent the tricolour,” she added.

Mithali Raj said that this is the perfect time for her to bid adieu to the game saying that Indian women’s cricket is currently in some capable hands and that the future is looking bright. Mithali paid her gratitude to the Board of Cricket for Control in India (BCCI) for all the support she received throughout her career as a player and the captain.

“It was an honour to have led the team for so many years. It definitely shaped me as a person and hopefully helped shape Indian Women’s Cricket as well,” Mithali concluded in her letter. Mithali Raj ended her career as the leading run-scorer in the ODIs having amassed 7805 runs in 232 matches at an average of 50.64 including 7 centuries and 64 fifties. Mithali also has 699 runs to her name in 12 Test matches while aggregating 2364 runs in T20 internationals in 89 matches.
