Punjab Kings (PBKS) team head Former Indian coach Anil Kumble picked top players from IPL 2022 mega auction. With only one IPL final appearance to show for since 2008, expectations are low from PBKS this year, although they have assembled a competitive squad. Mayank Agarwal is the most obvious captaincy choice for Punjab Kings. He was their first retention for Rs 12 crore and despite his not-too-illustrious T20I career, remained their most expensive player after the IPL 2022 Auction. More importantly, he knows how the franchise works both on and off the field.

With the bat, he has scored over 400 runs at an average of around 40 and a strike rate of 140-plus in each of the last two seasons. He’s one of their main batters at the top of the order, and in the solitary game last season where he stood in for KL Rahul as PBKS captain, he showed the ability to lead from the front.

There’s just one thing going against him he doesn’t have much to back him in terms of experience in terms of leading a high-level team. If the Punjab Kings can live with that, Agarwal will likely wear the captain’s armband in IPL 2022. In Jonny Bairstow and Liam Livingstone, Punjab has two of the most dangerous hitters of the ball against any type of bowling in the top and middle order. Shah Rukh Khan who was touted as a one to watch out for went for big money to the Kings. West Indies bowling allrounder Odean Smith is also an excellent buy for the team.

Kagiso Rabada will lead a bowling attack that includes Smith and left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh and possibly Raj Bawa, who was one of the leading fast bowlers at the recent Under-19 World Cup. After quite a while, the team is looking really good on the papers but matches are not played on paper, are they? Punjab might have possibly wanted another Indian option for their middle order. Rahul Chahar will have to carry the burden of the spin department.
