Irfan Pathan give Idea to BCCI host farewell game for former cricketers

Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has put forward an interesting idea. Pathan suggested to BCCI a ‘charity-cum-farewell game’ between a team comprising retired Indian cricketers who never received a proper send-off against the current Indian team led by Virat Kohli.

Irfan Pathan has come up with an exciting idea which could turn into reality if the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is interested. Pathan made up a playing XI of the recently retired cricketers – Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni, Irfan Pathan, Ajit Agarkar, Zaheer Khan, Prgayan Ojha – and suggested that they could take on the current Indian team players led by Virat Kohli in a match which could also act as a send-off for those who didn’t get a farewell game from the Indian cricket board.

Pathan also suggested that the match can be played for a good cause with the proceeds going towards charity. MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina were the latest in a long list of Indian cricket legends who recently announced their international retirement. Pathan had decided to quit all cricket in January this year.

“Many people are talking about a farewell game for retired players who didn’t get a proper send-off from the game. How about a charity cum farewell game from a team consisting of retired players vs the current Indian team?,” Pathan tweeted. The likes of Yuvraj Singh, Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan, Pathan and Gautam Gambhir had also stepped away from the sport without getting the chance to play farewell games.

Former India all-rounder Yuvraj believes the BCCI did not manage his former teammates such as Harbhajan, Sehwag and Zaheer well towards the end of their careers and hoped the board will recognise the efforts of match-winners in the future and honour them for their contribution towards Indian cricket.

Yuvraj, who retired from international cricket playing for 19 years, did not get a farewell game and neither did Zaheer or Sehwag. Yuvraj also feels that the way BCCI handled him towards the end of his career was ‘unprofessional’, although it wasn’t surprising for him. In July, Yuvraj said he wanted the BCCI will pay respect to some of the greats of the game, who couldn’t finish their careers on a high.
