The Indian women’s hockey team scripted history by defeating defending champions China 1-0 in the final of the Asian Games, winning the gold medal and securing direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

The title clash, played at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium in Japan, carried enormous significance for India, as victory would guarantee a place at the Los Angeles Olympics. Rising to the occasion, the Indian team delivered a disciplined and determined performance to edge past China and capture its  Asian Games gold medal in after 44 years.

The match was decided by a solitary goal from Lalremsiami, whose strike in the 10th minute of the opening quarter proved to be the difference. Breaking through China’s defensive line, Lalremsiami calmly found the back of the net to hand India an early lead.

India’s defence then produced a superb display, successfully protecting the one-goal advantage for the remainder of the contest. The team denied China any clear scoring opportunities, sealing a memorable victory and reclaiming the Asian Games crown.

The triumph marks a historic milestone for Indian women’s hockey. Before this victory, India had won the Asian Games gold medal only once, at the 1982 New Delhi Asian Games. The team had endured more than four decades without another title, finishing runners-up in 1998 after losing to South Korea and again in 2018, when it settled for silver after defeat to Japan.

By defeating reigning champions China in the final, the Indian women’s hockey team ended a 44-year wait for Asian Games gold while also earning a coveted place at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, marking one of the finest achievements in the history of Indian women’s hockey.
