India plans global sports hub push with bid for 2038 Asian Games
India submits expression of interest for 2038 Asian Games aiming to strengthen global sports presence with Ahmedabad emerging as key host contender amid competition from other Asian nations

India has taken a significant step toward establishing itself as a global sports hub by formally expressing interest in hosting the 2038 Asian Games. The Indian Olympic Association has submitted its proposal, signaling the country’s ambition to elevate its standing in international sports.
Initial discussions around the bid took place during a recent Olympic Council of Asia meeting held in Sanya, China. IOA CEO Raghuram Iyer confirmed that the proposal has entered early stage talks, with more clarity expected in the coming years as the process moves forward.
Ahmedabad has emerged as a strong contender to host the event, given its growing reputation as a venue for major international competitions. The city has already been proposed for future global events including the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics, strengthening its chances for the Asian Games as well.
India will face competition from countries such as South Korea and Mongolia, both of which have also shown interest in hosting the prestigious multi sport event. The final decision on the host nation is likely to be announced in 2028.
The Asian Games, regarded as the largest multi sport event after the Olympics, attracts participation from around 45 countries and over 11000 athletes. India has previously hosted the games twice in New Delhi in 1951 and 1982. If successful in its bid, the 2038 edition would mark the return of the Asian Games to India after a gap of more than five decades.
By targeting major events like the Asian Games, Olympics, and Commonwealth Games, India is steadily positioning itself as a dominant force in the global sporting landscape, aiming to build world class infrastructure and enhance its international reputation.
