Gautam Gambhir finally breaks silence on Virat Kohli missing Century
Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir has praised Virat Kohli for his match-winning performance against New Zealand in ICC ODI World Cup 2023 and pointed out that there is no match finisher than him.

Chasing the target of 274 runs given by the Kiwis, the Indian team lost 6 wickets in 48 overs and reached the victory limit. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja hit the winning boundary.
Meanwhile, Virat Kohli scored 95 runs off 104 balls with 8 fours and 2 sixes to help the two-time champions register a four-wicket win with two overs to spare. During a discussion on Star Sports, Gautam Gambhir was asked about Virat Kohli finishing the game as a No. 3 batsman, to which he responded, “I don’t understand why the finisher tag is given only to No. 5 to No. 7 batsmen”.
A top-order batsman can also be a finisher. A batter coming in at 11 can be a finisher. It has just been created by the media,” he said. “There was probably no finisher 10 years ago, there can’t be a better finisher than Virat Kohli because of the number of matches he has won. So don’t call only 5th, 6th and 7th down players as finishers. The finisher is the one who scores the last run,” said Gautam Gambhir.
Gautam Gambhir said that there should be no finisher tag. He agreed with Sanjay Manjrekar that just like Sachin Tendulkar is called a ‘Master Blaster’, Virat Kohli should just as well be called a “Master Chaser”.

When Gautam Gambhir was asked about Virat Kohli missing his 49th ODI century by just 5 runs, he said, “When we stop remembering the 95, think how obsessed we are with the century. It doesn’t matter whether it’s the 49th or the 100th century, he won the match.” Cricketer and commentator Gautam Gambhir said modern batting great Virat Kohli should be commended for his 95 under pressure.
“Praise Kohli because he won the match for us. 95 runs from zero is a big journey. Appreciate him for the pressure he batted under. “We have to say again and again that if India wants to win the World Cup 2023, the obsession with statistics must end,” said former Indian opening batsman Gautam Gambhir.
