The world’s richest cricket body, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has recorded a new record in paying income tax to the centre government, with its income increasing significantly year after year. BCCI will receive 23 crore dollars from International Cricket Council-ICC during 2024-27 for Team India participation in international matches. Income tax is also paid to the government at the same level. In the financial year 2021-22, the BCCI paid a record Rs 1,159 crore in income tax. If compared to the previous year, BCCI’s income tax has increased to Rs 300 crore in a single year.

The tax itself has increased by Rs 300 crore, which means that the revenue could be much more, surprising everyone. BCCI paid income tax of Rs 844.92 crore in 2020-21 financial year and Rs 882.29 crore in 2019-20. It has earned total revenue of Rs 7,606 crore in the year 2021-22. It has spent Rs 3,064 crore and paid taxes on the remaining Rs 4,500 crore.

The amount of income tax is likely to increase further in the next five years. Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary informed this information in the Rajya Sabha. Based on the returns submitted by the BCCI, the Minister brought to the attention of the House the amount earned and expenses incurred by the BCCI in the last five years. BCCI receives hundreds of crores of rupees every year through the International Cricket Council.

Apart from this it has many other financial sources. IPL is important in this. Small form of cricket  that the board rakes in a huge amount of revenue. With the addition of two more new teams to the Indian Premier League in 2022, revenue has further increased. BCCI earns hundreds of crores of rupees from various sources including match broadcasting rights and sponsorship.

BCCI will have more money flowing in over the next five years. A large number of international matches will be held at home, and BCCI aims to earn huge amount through the broadcasting rights of these. Like the IPL auction, there will be separate auctions for digital and TV. BCCI has received Rs 48,390 crore from IPL. Similarly, it plans to earn Rs 8,000 crore by selling the broadcast of international cricket matches.
