Early trends from the counting of votes show Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) taking an unassailable lead, as predicted by all exit polls earlier. In a fierce multi-cornered fight, Congress has been dislodged to second place and Akalis are struggling to catch up.

As of 9:54 am, trends have AAP at 83 and Congress at 18 out of total 117 seats. Akalis are at 9 and BJP and allies at 4. AAP candidate Jeevan Jot leads after the first round of counting in Amritsar East.

Meanwhile, Charanjit Singh Channi is trailing behind Aam Aadmi Party candidates in his traditional seat, Chamkaur Sahib, as well as in Bhadaur. Lok Congress leader and former Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh is also trailing in Patiala Assembly constituency.

Counting of votes for 117 assembly seats in Punjab began on Thursday amid tight security arrangements. Ferozepur Rural, Kharar, Lehra, Dharamkot and Attari were among the seats where the AAP was leading. The SAD was leading in Bholath and Tarn Taran, among others.

Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi trailing in both seats

Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi is trailing from Chamkaur Sahib and Bhadaur, the two assembly seats from which he was contesting the assembly elections. Chamkaur Sahib is considered a known turf for Channi who has represented the constituency in the assembly for three terms since 2007. The Bhadaur seat in Aam Aadmi Party’s stronghold Malwa was a bit of uncharted territory for him.
