History:

The origins of World Music Day have been traced back to 1982 when French Minister of Culture Jack Lang proposed the idea of celebrating a day of music or Fête de la Musique (festival of music).

As per another theory, World Music Day has been celebrated since 1976 when Joel Cohen proposed the idea of an all-night music festival to celebrate the beginning of summer solstice.

In any case, the first World Music Day celebrations took place in Paris in 1982 where more than 1,000 musicians performed in various parts of the city. Since then, musicians take to streets, parks and concert venues to play and share their love for music on this occasion.

Significance:

World Music Day looks to emphasize the important role played by music in each of our lives. The occasion serves as a platform for amateur and professional musicians to perform in public spaces.

World Music Day also recognizes the power of music in uniting people across borders, cultures, and languages through this universal power of melodies and rhythms.
