Rahul Gandhi to Visit Andaman and Nicobar Islands Amid Project Concerns

Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi is set to tour Andaman and Nicobar Islands from April 26 to 28, likely to review the Great Nicobar development project and assess environmental concerns.

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to visit the Andaman and Nicobar Islands starting Sunday, marking a three day tour that is expected to draw attention to a major infrastructure proposal in the region.

According to Congress in charge Manickam Tagore, the visit will take place from April 26 to 28. During this period, Rahul Gandhi is likely to personally review the proposed Great Nicobar holistic development project, which has been estimated at a cost of Rs 81000 crore and has already triggered environmental debates.

The visit comes weeks after Rahul Gandhi held discussions in New Delhi with members of the Andaman and Nicobar Territorial Congress Committee and representatives from the Great Nicobar Tribal Council. Community leaders had urged him to visit the islands and understand the situation on the ground, particularly in light of concerns over the ecological impact of the project.

Environmentalists and local groups have raised alarms that the large scale development initiative could significantly affect the fragile ecosystem of Great Nicobar. The upcoming visit is expected to focus on these concerns while also providing the Congress leader an opportunity to interact with local stakeholders.

Rahul Gandhiโ€™s tour is being closely watched as it combines political outreach with a direct assessment of a project that has become a focal point of debate over development versus environmental preservation.
