The model code of conduct is likely to come into effect from March 14. The BJP has already released its first list of 195 candidates that has seen the names of several top guns as the party gears up to win its third term under PM Narendra Modi. In the first list, the Bharatiya janata party has fielded two former chief ministers, Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Biplab Kumar.

Meanwhile, the Congress said it is still deliberating on its candidates as seat-sharing talks are underway with its I.N.D.I.A alliance members. It said it will take time to decide the names and not rush like the BJP. The Election Commission has decided to deploy artificial intelligence technology to conduct free and fair Lok Sabha elections to be held before May.

A dedicated section for artificial intelligence has been created at ECI to flag and remove false information on social media and digital platforms. During elections it is quick to remove false and inflammatory content on social media and to take strict action like asking social media platforms to suspend or block accounts if any party or candidate continues to violate the rules.

According to officials, the commission will also focus on fact-checking, combating disinformation and ensuring greater security in sensitive areas. Data from the Election Commission says that 96.88 crore people are eligible to vote in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, making it the largest electorate in the world. Additionally, 1.85 crore people between the ages of 18-19 have registered to cast their votes, the election body said.
