Cyclone Biparjoy: no power in 1000 villages, 2 dead 22 injured

Roofs have been blown off houses and trees and electric poles uprooted, leaving thousands without power as a severe cyclone makes landfall and heavy rains lash both the Indian and Pakistani coasts. Cyclone Biparjoy: no power in 1000 villages, 2 dead 22 injured.

At least two people died in India’s western state of Gujarat after being swept away by floods just before the cyclone hit, officials said on Friday. Two people died and 22 were injured as cyclonic storm Biparjoy wreaked havoc in Gujarat on Thursday, uprooting trees, and damaging several vehicles and houses.

The cyclone is likely to weaken into a depression this evening over Rajasthan. The longest cyclone to have struck the Arabian Sea, Biparjoy knocked out power in nearly 1000 villages and threw shipping containers into the sea in western India before moving to Pakistan where lashing winds and rain are expected to strike a part struck by devastating floods last year.

The storm made landfall a night earlier, packing windspeeds of 85 kph (53 mph), gusting up to 105 kph (86 mph) through the coastal regions of western India’s Gujarat state. Pakistani authorities were on high alert after evacuating 82,000 people.
