Sowjanya Rape and Murder case:  Accused Santosh Rao innocent, court orders to release

A special CBI court in Bengaluru has issued an order in connection with the Ujire Sowjanya Rape and Murder case. The accused Santosh Rao was declared innocent and ordered to be released. Sowjanya Rape and Murder case:  Accused Santosh Rao’ acquitted, court orders release.

The CBI court has announced the verdict after 11 years in the Sowjanya Rape and Murder case, a resident of Dharmasthala, a student of SDM College in Ujira, which was in the national news. A special CBI court has announced the verdict acquitting Santosh Rao, the main accused in the case.

Sowjanya, a II PU student, was found dead in Ujire near Dharmasthala on October 10, 2012. While the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had investigated the case, the charge-sheet was filed by the CBI. It named Santosh Rao, a contract labourer from Kumdapura, as the only accused in the charge sheet.

The rape case that took place near Dharamsthala in Belthangadi taluk of Dakshina Kannada district was in the news all over the country. There were massive protests along the coastal Karnataka. Sowjanya, who was coming home after finishing college, was raped and murdered. Santosh Rao was arrested by the police in connection with the case. CBI court judge CB Santhosh has issued an order after a long trial. The accused was acquitted due to lack of evidence in the case.
