Cyclone Biparjoy: Heavy rainfall, IMD issued red alert in these states

The India Meteorological Department has said that Cyclone Biparjoy would make landfall near Jakhau Port on the evening of 15 June as a ‘very severe cyclonic storm’ with maximum wind speed reaching up to 150 kilometres per hour. Cyclone Biparjoy: Heavy rain, IMD issued red alert in these states.

IMD in its forecast also said that widespread rains and thunderstorms may lash Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Northeast India, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Coastal Karnataka, Goa and Lakshadweep. As per IMD, Widespread light/moderate rainfall at most places with isolated Heavy to Very Heavy falls very likely over the region during next 5 days.

Isolated extremely heavy rainfall also likely over Meghalaya during 14-16 June. In East India, IMD has said that light/moderate fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with thunderstorm/lightning/gusty winds very likely Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim and Andaman & Nicobar Islands during next 5 days.

The cyclone Biparjoy is expected to make landfall near Jakhau Port in Kutch district today evening as a “very severe cyclonic storm” with maximum wind speed reaching up to 150 kilometres per hour, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its bulletin.

The department said that the intensity of rainfall would increase with the cyclone approaching, with isolated places in the districts of Kutch, Devbhumi Dwarka and Jamnagar likely to witness extremely heavy showers. IMD informed that red, orange and yellow alerts have been issued in several districts of Gujarat and Rajasthan. Here’s a look at how states are preparing for cyclone Biparjoy.

The sea condition off Saurashtra and Kutch coasts is expected to be severe until June 15, improving afterward. The Meteorological Department warns of a storm surge in Kachchh, Devbhumi Dwarka, Porbandar, Jamnagar, and Morbi districts, with astronomical tides of 3-6 meters likely to flood low-lying areas during landfall.
