Cooking oil price down Rs 8 to 12 per litre

The government has asked edible oil associations to cut the maximum retail price (MRP) of major edible oils by Rs 8-12 per litre with immediate effect as per global market rates. Food and Public Distribution Department Secretary Sanjeev Chopra held a meeting with representatives in this regard on Friday.

According to the report, the Union Ministry told the delegates that when manufacturers or refiners cut prices to distributors, the benefit should be passed on from the industry to consumers and the ministry should be regularly informed.

“Indian consumers can expect to pay less for their edible oils as edible oil prices show a downward trend and witness further cutbacks from the edible oil industry. The Ministry also said that if there is inflation anxiety, it will also be removed.

Industry representatives, including Indian Solvent Extraction Association and Indian Vegetable Oil Producers Association, were present in the second meeting convened within a month to discuss further reduction in retail prices of edible oils amid persistent fall in global prices.

The ministry said in the meeting that the edible oil companies should ensure that the prices in the local market come down in line with the continuous decline in the international prices of imported edible oils. They have been instructed to ensure that price reductions in the worldwide market are passed on to end consumers at the earliest.

In the last two months, prices of various edible oils have dropped by 150-200 dollar per tons globally. The ministry had earlier convened a meeting with top edible oil associations and within a month, the MRP of several big brands of refined soybean and sunflower oils was reduced by Rs 5 to Rs 15 per litre, while cuts in mustard oil and other cooking oils were also made.
