Israeli President Isaac Herzog has announced that Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar will receive the Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism in recognition of his courage during an alleged mid-air attack aboard a flydubai passenger aircraft.
The pilot’s actions reportedly helped prevent a potential aviation disaster while the aircraft was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30, 2026. Israel’s President has said he will personally present the award to Machchhar once he recovers from his injuries.
Israeli President Praises Indian Pilot’s Courage:
President Herzog announced the decision while honouring six Israeli civilians who helped bring the situation under control aboard the aircraft. He praised Machchhar’s bravery, determination and professionalism, saying his actions helped avert a catastrophe.
Herzog also expressed his wishes for the Indian captain’s full and speedy recovery. The decision to recognise Machchhar reflects the critical role he played in responding to the emergency despite sustaining serious injuries.
What Happened Aboard flydubai Flight FZ1073?:
The incident occurred on September 30, 2026, aboard flydubai Flight FZ1073, which was operating from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The confrontation reportedly caused the aircraft to enter a steep descent, creating a serious threat to everyone on board. Despite suffering severe injuries, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door, enabling passengers and crew members to intervene.
Several passengers reportedly entered the cockpit and helped restrain the alleged attacker. Other pilots travelling aboard the aircraft then helped take control of the situation. The plane was diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, where it made a safe emergency landing. The actions of the captain, passengers and other crew members were instrumental in bringing the crisis to an end.
