Agnipath protest : 35 trains cancelled , over 200 trains affected so far

Over 200 trains have been affected so far due to the protests against the Agnipath scheme for recruitment in the armed forces, the Railways said Friday. Around 35 trains have been cancelled while 13 short-terminated since the protests erupted on Wednesday, the national carrier said.

The worst-hit East Central Railways which covers Bihar, Jharkhand and parts of Uttar Pradesh, the states which have witnessed widespread protests has also decided to “monitor” the operations of eight trains due to the agitations. The officials said they are keeping an eye on the movement of these trains and will take decision on their operation as the situation evolves.

The Indian Railways on Friday cancelled or partially terminated a number of trains in the wake of violent protests in UP, Bihar and Telangana against the new army recruitment scheme, Agnipath. Violent protests have erupted in several states including UP, Bihar, Haryana and Telangana. The army aspirants protesting against the scheme today targeted railways stations and set on fire some trains in Bihar and Telangana.

Due to this, the railways decided to cancel or partially terminate trains to ensure safety of the passengers. In all, a total of 200 train services have been affected – 35 trains have been cancelled while 13 have been short terminated throughout the country. Eastern Railways’ CPRO Ekalabya Chakraborty today said that eight trains including Duronto Express were affected due to ongoing agitation.

Moreover, Bhagalpur-Danapur Intercity Express (13401) and Jamalpur-Kiul DEMU Passenger Special (03487) have been short terminated at Dhanauri. Railways Board spokesperson Amitabh Sharma said 116 train services have been affected in at 24 places in Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana. He said the 37 trains have been cancelled. In Telangana, the South Central Railway cancelled Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) services. Earlier in the day, a train was set on fire at Secunderabad Railway Station.
