ISLAMABAD: A girl child is raped every two hours in Pakistan, according to a recent survey, highlighting the unsafe conditions for women in a country where honor killings are rampant. Rape every 2 hours in Pakistan: Punishment is only 0.2 %.

A survey conducted by Pakistani channel SAMAA TV’s Investigative Unit (SIU) based on data collected from Punjab province’s home department and ministry of human rights said that while rape cases against women in Pakistan are on the rise, the conviction rate is only 0.2 percent. According to newly collected data, 21,900 women were reported to have been raped in the country from 2017 to 2021. This means that around 12 women are raped every day across the country, or one woman every two hours, the survey said.

In 2017, around 3,327 cases of rape were reported, according to statistics. It decreased to 4,456 cases in 2018, 4,573 cases in 2019, 4,478 cases in 2020 and increased to 5,169 cases in 2021, the report said.

In 2022, the media reported 305 rape cases across the country. 57 cases were reported in May, June (91), July (86) and August (71). Earlier media reports said that around 350 rape cases were reported in Punjab from May 2022 to August 2022 but no data was available for the first four months of the year.

In 2022, 1,301 cases of sexual violence against women were tried in 44 courts in Pakistan. The police filed chargesheets in 2,856 cases. But the report said that only 4% of the cases were investigated. The conviction rate in rape cases during this period was 0.2 per cent, the report said.

In 2020, the United Nations Development Program ranked Pakistan at the top of 75 countries with anti-women bias in courts.

In July this year, a report released by the World Economic Forum ranked Pakistan as the second worst country in terms of gender equality and ranked 145 out of 146 countries surveyed. Only Afghanistan performed worse than Pakistan.

Pakistan (145th) has a population of 107 million women and will close 56.4 percent of the gender gap affecting them by 2022. This is the highest level of parity Pakistan has posted since the release of the WHO report.

International organizations including the United Nations have urged Pakistan to take action against the increasing number of honor killings in the country. According to data from the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, 1,957 honor killings have been reported in the past four years, The Express Tribune reported.

The average rate of honor killing among women between the ages of 15-64 was found to be 15 million women per year. This may be another dubious world distinction we’ve achieved, an article in the paper said.
