Leadership change buzz intensifies in Karnataka Congress, factional lobbying reaches decisive stage

Bengaluru : Speculation over a possible leadership change in Karnataka has reached a crucial stage, with intense lobbying and strategic manoeuvring underway at the national level of the Congress party.

Internal developments indicate that both Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar camps have become increasingly active as discussions over the future leadership gather momentum.

Sources suggest that deliberations are taking place in New Delhi, with the Congress high command closely monitoring the evolving political situation. The possibility of a leadership transition, either before or after the upcoming budget session, has triggered heightened political activity within the state unit.

Siddaramaiah camp explores Dalit CM option

According to political insiders, the Siddaramaiah camp is preparing a strategic response in case leadership change becomes unavoidable. The camp is reportedly considering projecting a Dalit leader as a potential Chief Ministerial candidate.

This move is seen as an attempt to reshape the political narrative and retain influence within the party’s power structure. Senior leaders have floated names such as Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara, who is widely regarded as a senior Dalit face in the party.

Former minister Rajanna has openly stated that if Siddaramaiah steps down, the opportunity should be given to a Dalit leader, specifically backing Parameshwara for the role. He also mentioned that AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge would be an ideal choice if considered.

Responding cautiously, Parameshwara avoided direct political escalation, stating that such matters should not be debated publicly and that any decision rests solely with the party high command. However, he also asserted his political credentials, highlighting his role in strengthening the party and serving as Deputy Chief Minister.

DK Shivakumar camp pushes leadership narrative

Meanwhile, supporters of DK Shivakumar have intensified efforts to project him as the natural successor to Siddaramaiah. Party workers and loyalists are attempting to strengthen Shivakumar’s public image as a mass leader capable of leading the state.

Recently, the Karnataka Congress social media unit shared a video portraying Shivakumar as a “people’s leader who has won hearts,” signalling a coordinated attempt to elevate his stature. Political observers see this as part of a broader strategy to consolidate support within the party and strengthen his claim to the top post.

Additionally, ministers such as MB Patil have also been mentioned in leadership discussions, reflecting the complexity of internal power equations.

High command holds key as uncertainty continues

Several Congress leaders, including MLA Kadalur Uday, have urged the high command to take an early decision to end uncertainty. However, Rural Development Minister Priyank Kharge clarified that the leadership decision would be taken at an appropriate time by the party leadership.

The growing factional positioning highlights the underlying power struggle within the Karnataka Congress, even as Siddaramaiah continues to hold office. While no official announcement has been made, the increasing political signalling from multiple camps suggests that the leadership issue could soon reach a decisive turning point.
