Cow Slaughter: Law allows to slaughter above 12 year age cow; CM Siddaramaiah 

The indication by Animal Husbandry Minister K Venkatesh that the anti-cow slaughter legislation would be withdrawn has triggered a political slugfest in Karnataka with the Opposition BJP set to hold its first State-wide protest against the Congress government on Monday and Tuesday. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has given a clarification on the withdrawal of Anti-Cow Slaughter Law between BJP and Congress leaders talk fight. He said on Monday that a decision will be taken after discussion in the cabinet.

Answering a question about animal husbandry minister K Venkatesh’s statement asking why cows should not be slaughtered if buffaloes are slaughtered, Siddaramaiah said that the law allows slaughtering of cows above 12 years of age.

We will discuss it (reviewing the cow slaughter ban law) in the Cabinet meeting and take a decision. According to the 1964 Act, slaughter of cows above 12 years of age and unable to be used in agricultural activities is permitted. Venkatesh also said this. However, Siddaramaiah said that he did not say it clearly.

The BJP protested against the possibility of withdrawing the cow slaughter ban law implemented by the BJP government. The ‘Karnataka Prohibition of Cow Slaughter and Cattle Preservation Act-2020’ came into effect in 2021. The Congress, which was in opposition at that time, had opposed the bill.

Minister Sharanbasappa Darshanapura responded in Yadgiri that the government was thinking of repealing the Prohibition of Cow Slaughter Act and said that CM Siddaramaiah will take an appropriate decision. He said that he will give an opinion in the cabinet about the ban of this act.
