BREAKING: First death due to H3N2 virus in Karnataka

Bengaluru: The first victim of H3N2 virus has taken place in Karnataka. The deceased was identified as an 85-year-old man from Hassan and it is said that the deceased had been suffering from cough and fever for a few days. First death due to H3N2 virus in Karnataka.

Meanwhile, the sudden appearance of cases of influenza A subtype H3N2 across the country has raised concerns. Hospitals across the country have been reporting thousands of H3N2 cases of influenza A over the past few months. It has fever for 3-5 days and persistent cough for three weeks.

Medical experts are suggesting guidelines and precautions to deal with H3N2. Medanta Dr Randeep Guleria, former top doctor of AIIMS, chairman said, “H3N2 is a type of influenza virus. We see this every year around this time. However, this is a virus that mutates over time, a process known as antigenic drift. We had a pandemic many years ago due to H1N1. That virus is now circulating as H3N2. So, it is a common influenza strain,” he said.

This influenza virus is spread through droplets, similar to COVID. So, those walking in public places should wear masks as a precaution, wash hands frequently, maintain physical distance. Its symptoms include fever, sore throat, cough, body aches and chills.

ICMR recently advised to avoid self-medication and use of antibiotics for this influenza. ICMR advised to consult a doctor if there’s symptoms not for home medications. If children complain of symptoms, parents are advised not to send them to schools to prevent the spread of infection.
