“As a first step, Air India has banned the passenger for 30 days, the maximum it is permitted to unilaterally do so, and reported the matter to the DGCA for further action,” the carrier said in a statement, adding, “A police complaint has already been lodged and Air India is committed to assist the law enforcement agencies as well as regulatory authorities.”

The carrier has formed a committee to probe lapses on the part of the crew and address the shortcomings, the statement said. “We have also constituted an internal committee to probe lapses on part of Air India’s crew and address the deficiencies that delayed quick redressal of the situation. We are also in regular contact with the aggrieved passenger and her family during the investigation and reporting process,” it said.

On November 26, the man, in an inebriated state, walked over to the woman’s seat in business class just after lunch when the lights were turned off, unzipped his trousers and flashed his private parts to her. He reportedly stood there after urinating, until one of his co-passengers asked him to leave.

The incident came to light when the woman, a senior citizen, wrote to Tata Group Chairman N Chandrasekharan and expressed her disappointment over the cabin crew’s “highly insensitive” behaviour towards the situation. They simply gave her a pair of pyjamas and slippers to change into, she said, adding that they took no action against the man.
