In a bid to prevent identity-related fraud in the country, the Central government has come out with new technological upgrades in Aadhaar to make it more secure for the citizens. Aadhaar Card Misused: Do this immediately if your Aadhaar Card misuse.

Last week, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), which issues the Aadhaar number in the country, launched a new two-layered security system. The security feature allows for faster detection of spoofing attempts and Aadhaar-based fingerprint authentication.

According to the UIDAI, the artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML)-based security mechanism will now employ a combination of both “finger minutia” and “finger pictures” to confirm the liveness of the fingerprint collected.

This two-factor or “layer” authentication will be an additional check to authenticate the validity (liveness) of the fingerprint and reduce the likelihood of spoofing attempts. According to the Aadhaar board, this new technical advancement might be advantageous in industries like banking and finance, telecommunications, and government.

It would improve the Aadhaar-enabled payment system and deter harmful attempts by unscrupulous people, benefiting the “bottom of the pyramid.” The new Aadhaar-based fingerprint authentication security system is now fully operational.

Today, the UIDAI and its regional offices are in contact with all organisations in order to assist any user agency that has not yet converted in transitioning to the new protected authentication mode as soon as possible. As of December 2022, the total number of Aadhaar authentication transactions had surpassed 88.29 billion, with an average of 70 million transactions per day.

This month, the UIDAI also unveiled a new AI/ML-based chatbot for citizens, “Aadhaar Mitra.” The chatbot will assist customers with issues like Aadhaar enrollment or update status, tracking of Aadhaar PVC card status, and enrollment centre location.

Furthermore, citizens will be able to register their complaints and monitor them using the bot. Aadhaar users may also verify their enrollment status using Interactive Voice Response (IVR) technology, which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
