Uttara Kannada SP suspends Bhatkal rural police CPI, head constable over corruption, misconduct allegations

Karwar: The Uttara Kannada Superintendent of Police, Deepan, has suspended CPI Manjunath Lingareddi and Head Constable Ashok Naik of Bhatkal Rural Police Station following serious allegations of drink-and-drive, extortion, and intimidation of complainants.

The move comes after preliminary investigations confirmed misconduct and abuse of authority by the officials. CPI Manjunath Lingareddi had recently been implicated in a drink-and-drive case. During the primary investigation, it was found that he violated official duties and rules, prompting the SP to order his suspension and recommend a higher-level inquiry.

Beyond the drink-and-drive allegation, Lingareddi faced multiple complaints of corruption, including extorting money from the public and allegedly assisting illegal sand traders. Despite repeated warnings, his behaviour showed no improvement, leading to the disciplinary action.

A related case involved a fine of Rs 15,000 collected from a citizen for a drink-and-drive violation, which was supposed to be deposited in court. Preliminary investigations revealed that the officials had misappropriated the amount instead of submitting it to the judicial authorities.

This malpractice, first reported in July, was confirmed during the SP’s inquiry. Head Constable Ashok Naik, who was reportedly helping CPI Lingareddi, was also suspended for intimidating complainants and pressuring them not to file formal complaints. This act of coercion and obstruction of justice prompted the disciplinary action against him.

SP Deepan emphasised that the suspension sends a clear warning to police personnel against corruption, negligence, and abuse of power. “This step is a message to all staff that misconduct, extortion, and failure to follow legal procedures will not be tolerated,” he said.

The suspension highlights the Uttara Kannada police administration’s commitment to uphold integrity and discipline within the force, especially in cases affecting public trust and law enforcement credibility. Both CPI Lingareddi and Head Constable Naik are now under investigation while the department ensures procedural and legal compliance in handling the matter.
