Tumakuru: Renaming of Mahatma Gandhi Indoor Stadium Sparks Political Outrage

Tumakuru : The recent renaming of the iconic Mahatma Gandhi Indoor Stadium in Tumakuru after Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara has ignited a political firestorm. Decades after the stadium carried the name of the Father of the Nation, the district administration replaced it with a new plaque reading “Dr. G. Parameshwara Indoor Sports Complex”, drawing sharp criticism from the opposition.
BJP activists were quick to respond, staging an immediate protest at the stadium. They demanded the removal of the new nameplate and restoration of Mahatma Gandhi’s name. At one point, demonstrators attempted to dismantle the board, leading to scuffles with the police. Two KSRP (Karnataka State Reserve Police) vehicles were deployed to manage the crowd, and several activists were detained to prevent escalation.
The protest reflects widespread public anger over what BJP leaders call an insult to Mahatma Gandhi. Activists questioned whether Dr. Parameshwara is considered greater than the Father of the Nation, accusing the district administration of acting as a puppet for the Congress government. “Congress, which has always glorified Gandhi, is now erasing his legacy to glorify its leaders,” said a senior BJP leader at the protest site.
Police have tightened security around the stadium to prevent further disturbances. The administration, however, has justified the move by citing development works and renovation projects at the complex, including upcoming state-level sports events and the construction of an international-standard cricket stadium within the 40-acre premises.
Dr. Parameshwara himself clarified that the name change was recommended by local athletes and officials, not requested personally, and emphasized that Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy remains intact. “I did not ask for my name to be placed here. It was suggested by sports enthusiasts and submitted to the district authorities,” he said, attempting to defuse the controversy.
The renaming has stirred a debate on the political use of public spaces and the sanctity of national icons. While the administration cites modernization and local recommendations, opposition parties argue that such actions undermine historical and cultural heritage, turning respected public institutions into political tools.
The Tumakuru incident has now become a symbolic flashpoint in Karnataka politics, reflecting the tension between governance, political priorities, and respect for national figures.
