Ramachandra Rao suspended after obscene video sparks controversy

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has ordered the suspension of Director General of Police (DGPI) of the Civil Rights Enforcement Directorate, Ramachandra Rao, following the circulation of an alleged obscene video on social media, triggering widespread outrage and political backlash in the state.

The suspension order was issued late on Monday night, barely hours after Ramachandra Rao was placed on 10 days of compulsory leave on Monday afternoon. According to the government order, the suspension has been imposed as an inquiry into the matter is still pending, and continuation in service could potentially influence the investigation.

The video, which went viral across social media platforms, allegedly shows Ramachandra Rao in police uniform inside an office, engaging in inappropriate behaviour with a woman. The visuals, reportedly recorded earlier, show the senior IPS officer seated on a chair, embracing and kissing the woman.

The emergence of the video has raised serious questions about conduct, discipline, and the misuse of official premises. The controversy has further intensified due to its timing. The video surfaced at a time when Rao’s stepdaughter, actor Ranya Rao, is already under investigation in a high-profile gold smuggling case.

Ranya Rao was recently arrested for allegedly smuggling gold from Dubai to Bengaluru, a case that has embarrassed the state police and customs authorities. Following her arrest, allegations had surfaced regarding the misuse of airport protocol facilities extended to Ranya Rao.

The Karnataka Home Department had ordered a probe to ascertain whether Ramachandra Rao had any role in facilitating protocol privileges during her airport movements and whether there was an abuse of official position in the smuggling operation.

Against this backdrop, the viral video has sparked sharp reactions from the public and opposition parties, who have termed the incident a serious blow to the credibility of the police department. Critics argue that the episode reflects a deeper issue of accountability and discipline within the system, especially at senior levels.

Sources said the government acted swiftly to contain the damage and ensure an impartial inquiry, as the matter involves a top-ranking police officer and has attracted national attention. The suspension is expected to remain in force until the completion of the departmental and related investigations.

Meanwhile, the state government has reiterated that no one is above the law and that strict action will be taken based on the outcome of the inquiry. The developments have once again brought the spotlight on ethical conduct in public office, with the case likely to have significant administrative and political ramifications in the days ahead.
