Quran recitation at Siddharoodha mutt event sparks: BJP protest in Dharwad

Quran recitation: A government event at the Siddharoodha mutt in Hubli sparked major controversy after Quran verses were recited during the program. Strongly condemning the move, BJP MLA Aravind Bellad led a protest in Dharwad, accusing the Congress government of disrespecting Hindu religious traditions.

Led by Bellad, BJP workers gathered in front of the Dharwad Deputy Commissioner’s office, performed a “homa” (fire ritual), and conducted a symbolic “purification” of the government premises. Priests chanted Rudra Patha while activists held placards reading “Mulla Moksha Homa,” expressing their anger over what they termed an “appeasement politics” act under Minister Santosh Lad’s leadership.

Bellad performed mangalarati (aarti) and said, “May God give good sense to Congress ministers and legislators who are promoting such communal acts in the name of secularism.”

He further alleged that under the Congress regime, religious harmony is being deliberately disturbed to gain minority votes. “The Siddharoodha mutt, known for its inclusive spiritual heritage, was misused for political propaganda. Mixing religion in government events is unacceptable,” Bellad asserted.

Party workers also submitted a memorandum to the district administration demanding strict action against officials responsible for allowing the Quran recitation at the event.

The incident has triggered widespread debate across North Karnataka, with several Hindu groups condemning the government’s handling of religious affairs. The Congress, however, has not issued any official statement regarding the controversy.

The Dharwad police have deployed additional security near the mutt and the DC office to prevent any untoward incidents as tensions continue to simmer.
