Soujanya Case Big Twist: Supreme Court Orders reinvestigation

The Supreme Court on Monday ordered a reinvestigation into the rape and murder of Soujanya in Dharmasthala and gave a three-month deadline for completing the investigation.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which had investigated the case, had earlier acquitted the accused. Following this, Soujanya’s mother, Kusumavathi Gowda, approached the Karnataka High Court seeking a fresh investigation.

However, the High Court dismissed her petition seeking a reinvestigation. She subsequently filed a Special Leave Petition (SLP) before the Supreme Court. In July, the Supreme Court had strongly criticised the CBI, observing that the investigation appeared to be poor and not independent, and had reserved its judgment.

The Soujanya case, which dates back 14 years, has raised several questions regarding the investigation and the judicial proceedings. There had also been persistent demands for the case to be investigated afresh.

The Supreme Court’s decision to order a fresh investigation is now being seen as a significant development in the case. As part of the reinvestigation, various aspects of the case, the earlier investigation, and the available evidence are expected to be examined again.

For years, the fight for justice in the Soujanya case has continued. With the Supreme Court’s latest order, the case has now entered a new phase.
