Kukke Subrahmanya temple staff threatened during eviction of unauthorized shops

Dakshina Kannada: Tensions rose at the renowned Adi Subrahmanya Temple after temple staff faced threats from a shop owner while carrying out an inspection and eviction of unauthorized shops encroaching on temple premises. The incident has sparked controversy in the temple area and among local devotees.

Temple management typically leases shop spaces for eleven months. However, some shopkeepers have allegedly failed to renew agreements or pay rent while continuing business operations, encroaching on footpaths and public areas of the temple. Complaints from devotees and locals about such violations had been repeatedly reported over the past months.

On Sunday, following orders from the temple’s Executive Officer (EO), staff member Mahesh was sent to inspect the premises. During the inspection, shop owner Yallappa Bandari reportedly obstructed the staff, questioned their authority, and allegedly used abusive language.

Sources said Bandari also attempted to exert political pressure by making threat calls through a local political figure to protect his encroachment. The incident has triggered public outrage, as devotees and locals criticized the shopkeeper’s actions as an attempt to bypass rules with political backing.

EO Yesuraj stated, “Our staff have been receiving threat calls. We will take all necessary legal action. I personally visited the site to support our team. The shop owner has been asked to vacate the premises by evening. Failure to comply will invite strict legal measures.”

Temple staff member Harish explained, “The lease for shop number 12 in the commercial complex had expired over a month ago. On EO’s direction, we attempted to clear the shop. We received multiple phone calls, including from political sources, but as instructed, we proceeded with eviction.

The temple premises must be protected, as emphasized by the Muzarai Department Minister, and legal action will follow if the shop is not vacated.”
