Karnataka Weather Alert: Rain and Gusty Winds Expected in Bengaluru

Rain activity is expected to continue across several parts of Karnataka, with Bengaluru among the areas likely to see showers and thunderstorms. The India Meteorological Department has forecast thunderstorms and strong surface winds over South Interior Karnataka on September 17 and 18.

For Bengaluru residents, the forecast points to a changeable weather pattern, with cloudy conditions and rain possible in different parts of the city. The IMD also maintains a separate city warning service for Bengaluru, covering forecasts and thunderstorm warnings for the coming days.

Several districts in South Interior Karnataka are expected to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds. Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Mysuru, Mandya, Ramanagara, Kolar and Tumakuru are among the areas mentioned in the forecast.

Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, Hassan, Shivamogga, Davanagere, Chitradurga, Ballari, Chamarajanagar, Chikkaballapur and Vijayanagara could also receive rain during the period.

The possibility of strong winds makes the forecast important for people travelling on roads, particularly during thunderstorms. Sudden changes in weather can also affect visibility and traffic conditions, especially when rain becomes intense for short periods.

North Interior Karnataka is also expected to remain under a weather watch. The IMD has indicated thunderstorms, lightning and strong surface winds in the region on September 17 and 18.

Districts including Bidar, Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Raichur, Koppal and Belagavi may receive light rain in some areas. Other northern districts could also see changing weather conditions as the system develops.

The weather outlook becomes more active in parts of North Interior Karnataka on September 18, when districts including Bagalkot, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri and Vijayapura are expected to see thunderstorms and strong winds according to the forecast pattern.

Coastal Karnataka has a different outlook. The IMD subdivision warning issued on September 16 showed no warning for Coastal Karnataka on September 17 and September 18, although localised rain can still occur depending on conditions.

South Interior Karnataka remains the more active zone in the latest warning. The IMD has also indicated further periods of unsettled weather in the region beyond September 18, including heavy rain warnings on later days.

The forecast comes as Karnataka continues to experience a changing monsoon pattern, with rainfall varying considerably between districts. Bengaluru and other southern areas can see brief but intense showers even when rainfall is not continuous throughout the day.

For residents, the practical concern will be sudden thunderstorms and gusty winds rather than persistent rain alone. People heading out during periods of lightning are advised to move to safer indoor locations and avoid standing near isolated trees or exposed areas.

Motorists should also be prepared for wet roads and reduced visibility during sudden showers. Those travelling on two wheelers may need to be particularly cautious when rain and strong winds occur together.

The weather is not expected to remain identical across the entire state. While parts of South Interior Karnataka are under stronger warnings, conditions in North Interior Karnataka and coastal districts can differ from one location to another.

Bengaluru residents can therefore expect a mixed weather pattern, with rain and thunderstorms possible in some parts of the city while other areas remain relatively dry. The IMD city service continues to provide district and location specific updates as conditions change.
