Inspector suspended in Dharwad Aditya suicide case amid political outrage

Dharwad : The Dharwad Aditya suicide case has taken a serious turn with the suspension of the Vidyagiri police station inspector as the incident continues to trigger political and public outrage. Hubballi-Dharwad Police Commissioner N. Shashikumar has ordered the suspension of Inspector Rafiq following allegations of police misconduct linked to the student’s death.

Earlier, three police personnel—head constable Chandru Naduvinamani and constables Kiran Dokkannavar and Syed—were suspended on April 29. With the case intensifying, authorities extended action to the inspector on April 30.

The victim, Aditya Maggeri, a BSc student at Kittel College in Dharwad, was allegedly detained by police on suspicion of consuming ganja. Though medical tests reportedly returned negative, the family has alleged that police demanded ₹2,000 from the student. Unable to arrange the money after his mother refused, Aditya allegedly died by suicide on April 28 at his rented residence.

According to reports, he hanged himself from a ceiling fan. His family has blamed police harassment and financial pressure for the extreme step, sparking widespread anger.

The incident has led to protests by members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, who staged a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office, demanding strict action against the police personnel involved.

Political reactions have also intensified, with opposition parties including Bharatiya Janata Party and Janata Dal (Secular) criticising the state government and demanding accountability.

Commissioner Shashikumar had earlier stated that no one involved in the case would be protected. Following mounting pressure and public outcry, the suspension of the inspector marks a significant step in the ongoing investigation.

Further inquiries are underway, and officials have indicated that additional action may follow based on the findings.
