IMD Issued Heavy rainfall alert in Karnataka for next 3 days

Thunderstorms, lightning, and squalls are expected daily through March 31. Specifically, Mangaluru and surrounding coastal areas are likely to see rain accompanied by gusty winds.

Heavy Rainfall Alert: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for several parts of Karnataka over the next few days. While a general “heavy rainfall” alert has been highlighted for South Interior regions, the intensity and type of weather vary by subdivision.

Coastal Karnataka: Thunderstorms, lightning, and squalls are expected daily through March 31. Specifically, Mangaluru and surrounding coastal areas are likely to see rain accompanied by gusty winds.

South Interior Karnataka: A steady alert for thunderstorms and lightning remains in place for the next 3 days. Districts like Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, and Hassan are expected to see moderate rain with gusty winds (30–40 km/h).

North Interior Karnataka: Mostly dry for the next 48 hours, but an alert for thunderstorms and lightning begins on March 30. Expect isolated rain in districts like Belagavi, Bagalkote, and Dharwad toward the end of the month.

Many areas will experience gusty winds reaching 30–50 km/h during evening thunderstorms. Coastal districts like Udupi and Uttara Kannada may continue to experience hot and humid conditions despite the rain alerts.

The capital and surrounding rural areas are currently predicted to remain mostly dry through the weekend, with only isolated cloud cover or very light localized showers possible.

Safety Recommendations:

Avoid Shelter Under Trees: Lightning is a significant part of this alert; seek sturdy indoor shelter during storms.

Electronic Safety: Unplug sensitive appliances during active lightning and thunder.

Farmers: The IMD suggests protecting harvested crops, as sudden hailstorms or heavy showers could cause damage in interior districts.
