Five-state polls throw up surprises; BJP surges, Vijay’s TVK shocks Tamil Nadu

New Delhi : The ongoing counting of votes in the five-state Assembly elections has produced a series of surprising trends, reshaping political equations across the country. Early leads suggest strong gains for the Bharatiya Janata Party in eastern and northeastern states, while actor-turned-politician Vijay has emerged as a major disruptor in Tamil Nadu.

According to trends based on Election Commission data and television reports, Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has made significant inroads, challenging the dominance of both the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. Vijay is reportedly leading in key constituencies like Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East, signaling a potential shift in the state’s political landscape.

In a major upset, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is trailing in Kolathur, along with several DMK ministers. Meanwhile, AIADMK chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami is maintaining a lead in Edappadi, while BJP state president Nainar Nagendran is trailing in Sattur.

In West Bengal, a close contest is unfolding between the BJP and the ruling All India Trinamool Congress. However, early trends show the BJP taking a strong lead, reportedly ahead in over 190 seats, while the TMC is trailing with under 100 seats. The Left parties are marginal players in the current contest.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee initially faced a setback in her stronghold Bhabanipur but has since recovered to take a lead. She is currently ahead by over 8,000 votes against BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari. Adhikari, however, is leading in Nandigram, maintaining a narrow edge.

The BJP is also dominating in Assam, where the NDA alliance is leading in over 90 of the 126 seats. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is comfortably ahead in Jalukbari, while Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi is leading in Jorhat. Regional leaders, including Lurinjyoti Gogoi, are also performing strongly in select constituencies.

In Kerala, the Congress-led United Democratic Front appears to be staging a comeback, leading in over 75 seats, while the ruling Left Democratic Front is trailing with around 45 seats. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is reportedly facing a tough contest in his home turf.

Meanwhile, in Puducherry, the NDA alliance is on course to form the government again, with the All India N.R. Congress leading in a majority of the 30 seats.

It is important to note that these figures are based on early trends and have not yet been officially confirmed by the Election Commission. However, the patterns indicate a politically dynamic outcome, with regional shifts, emerging players, and strong performances by national parties shaping the electoral narrative.
