BJP gains upper hand in Koppal district planning committee election

Koppal :The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged with a clear edge in the election to the District Planning Committee (DPC) in Koppal, delivering a political setback to the ruling Congress in the district. Of the six members elected to the committee, four candidates backed by the BJP secured victory, while the Congress managed to win only two seats, indicating a shifting political balance at the local level.

The election for six members of the District Planning Committee was held on Tuesday at the Zilla Panchayat J.H. Patel Hall, located within the district administration complex in Koppal city. The poll was keenly watched, as it was seen as a test of strength between the ruling Congress and the opposition BJP in the district’s local governance structure.

In the results declared later in the evening, BJP-backed candidates Parashuram Hanumanthappa Nayak (46 votes), Balaraj Yallappa Gali (49), Shivanagouda Pundagoudru, and Somashekharappa Bherigi (51) emerged victorious. On the other hand, Congress-supported candidates Kallabagilamath Siddeshkumar (54) and Eshappa Amarappa (46) were elected to the committee. With four of the six seats going to BJP-backed candidates, the party has asserted its dominance and given a strong challenge to the ruling Congress.

According to official sources, out of a total of 96 eligible voters, 94 valid votes were cast during the election, while one vote was rejected. Polling commenced at 10 am and continued smoothly until 4 pm, after which counting was taken up and results were announced. The peaceful conduct of the election reflected the administrative preparedness, even as political stakes remained high.

Soon after the results were declared, BJP workers and leaders gathered at the venue to celebrate the party’s success. Sweets were distributed and slogans were raised, projecting the outcome as a morale booster for the party ahead of future local body and political contests in the district. Leader of the Opposition’s chief whip in the Legislative Assembly, Doddangouda Patil, MLC Hemalatha Nayak, and BJP state executive member Basavaraj Kyavater, along with several party leaders and workers, were present during the celebrations.

Political observers see the outcome as significant, as the District Planning Committee plays a crucial role in planning and approving development works and allocation of funds at the district level. The BJP’s strong showing is expected to influence decision-making dynamics within the committee and could intensify political competition between the BJP and Congress in Koppal in the coming days.
