Bismilla Nagar Name Sought for Tavarekere Metro Station
Residents of Bismilla Nagar have urged BMRCL to rename Tavarekere Metro Station, saying the proposed name would better reflect the nearby locality used daily by thousands.
A request to rename Tavarekere Metro Station has reached the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited, with residents of the nearby Bismilla Nagar area seeking the addition of their locality name to the station.
The request comes as the Pink Line stretch between Kalena Agrahara and Tavarekere moves closer to its opening. Local residents have asked BMRCL to consider naming the station Tavarekere Bismilla Nagar Metro Station.
The representation was submitted through Bengaluru Youth Welfare Trust to BMRCL Managing Director PC Jaffer. The residents have argued that Bismilla Nagar is located much closer to the metro station than the locality of Tavarekere.
According to the representation, Tavarekere is around 2.5 kilometres from the station, while Bismilla Nagar is a major residential area situated close to the proposed metro stop. Thousands of people from the surrounding neighbourhoods are expected to use the station for their daily travel.
The residents believe including Bismilla Nagar in the station name could make it easier for passengers to identify the area. They have also said that the request is based on local accessibility and identification rather than being limited to the interests of any particular community.
The group has urged BMRCL to reconsider its earlier representation and conduct a field inspection before taking a decision. It has also requested officials to consider the views of local residents and signatures collected in support of the proposal.
The representation has asked the metro authorities to obtain a suitable report from the concerned officials and examine the proposed name according to the applicable rules.
The naming request has emerged at a time when other metro stations in the BTM Layout Assembly constituency are also being discussed for possible renaming. BTM Layout MLA and Karnataka Minister Ramalinga Reddy had earlier written to BMRCL Managing Director PC Jaffer seeking changes to the names of three metro stations in the constituency.
The latest request regarding Tavarekere Metro Station will now have to be considered by the metro authorities. Any change in the official station name would depend on the relevant approval process and the decision of the competent authorities.
With the Pink Line expected to improve connectivity in several southern parts of Bengaluru, station names have become an important issue for neighbourhood identification. Residents are now hoping that BMRCL will examine the request based on location, passenger convenience and feedback from the surrounding areas.
