Auto driver arrested for abusing and assaulting North-Eastern woman over ride cancellation in Bengaluru
Bengaluru In a shocking incident, Kothanur police have arrested an auto driver identified as Pawan for allegedly abusing and attempting to assault a North-Eastern woman after she canceled her auto booking. The video of the heated altercation between the driver and the woman went viral on social media, sparking widespread outrage.
According to police sources, the incident took place around 7:30 pm on October 2. The woman had booked an auto from Kalyan Nagar to Banaswadi through a ride-hailing app. When the booked auto took longer than expected to arrive, she boarded another passing auto and canceled the initial booking. Shortly after, the original driver, Pawan, reached the pickup point and confronted the woman angrily for canceling the ride. He allegedly hurled abuses at her and even tried to physically assault her.
The woman lodged a complaint at Kothanur Police Station, following which Pawan was traced and arrested. The incident reignited discussions online about passenger safety, particularly concerning women using app-based auto services.
A video of the confrontation, reportedly filmed by bystanders, shows the driver shouting at the woman despite being aware that he was being recorded. The woman later shared the video, questioning the safety of women commuters and urging authorities to ensure stricter monitoring of drivers registered with app-based platforms.
The incident has triggered divided opinions on social media. While many users have extended support to the woman and demanded stern action against the driver, others debated whether canceling a ride after booking was appropriate. Police said that a detailed investigation is underway and assured that the woman’s safety and rights will be safeguarded.
This case once again highlights growing concerns over the safety of women passengers in public and app-based transport in Bengaluru.
